Zain's AI Bootcamp and Hackathon, three years running
Three parallel three-day tracks for business users, engineers and creatives, each ending in a hackathon. Delivered three years in a row.
1. Overview
Cognit DX designed and delivered the Zain AI Bootcamp and Hackathon, a multi-track artificial intelligence capability-building program for Zain, one of the leading ICT and digital lifestyle communications groups operating across the Middle East and Africa.
The program was delivered over three consecutive years, reflecting the continued relevance, impact, and success of the model. It was designed to train selected Zain employee cohorts on practical AI adoption, prompt engineering, AI development, and creative AI production, while also giving participants the opportunity to apply what they learned through hands-on projects and a final hackathon.
The bootcamp was structured as three parallel three-day learning tracks, each delivered to a separate cohort by a dedicated instructor. This allowed Zain to serve different employee personas at the same time: general business users, technical builders, and creative teams.
The three tracks were
- AI at Work for Everyone
- AI for Coders and Engineers
- AI for Creatives
Each track ran for three days, with a strong emphasis on practical application, hands-on exercises, real business tasks, and final group projects.
2. Program Design
The Zain AI Bootcamp and Hackathon was built around a simple but powerful idea: different employee groups need different AI capabilities.
General employees need to understand how to use AI as a productivity partner. Engineers need to learn how to build AI-enabled systems and use AI to accelerate software development. Creative teams need to understand how to direct, produce, and orchestrate AI-generated content across text, image, audio, and video.
Cognit DX therefore designed a parallel-track model that allowed Zain to train multiple audiences simultaneously while maintaining depth and relevance for each group.
The format included
- Three parallel cohorts
- Three dedicated instructors
- Three days of training per cohort
- Hands-on exercises and applied learning
- Role-specific AI tools and workflows
- Final project work and presentations
- Hackathon-style group competition and voting
3. Track 1: AI at Work for Everyone
The AI at Work for Everyone track was designed for general business users and employees across different functions. The course introduced participants to the fundamentals of artificial intelligence and focused heavily on prompt engineering, AI-assisted productivity, and the use of AI tools in daily office work.
The objective was to help employees understand how to communicate effectively with AI systems and use AI as a practical assistant for their day-to-day responsibilities.
The track included approximately 12 hours of prompt engineering practice, demonstrations, and hands-on exercises.
Day 1: Introduction to AI and AI Productivity

The emphasis was not on theory alone. Participants saw practical demonstrations of AI being used to complete real office tasks quickly and professionally.
Day 2: Participant-Led Prompting Practice
The second day shifted from demonstration to participant application. Each attendee was invited to bring a real task, file, challenge, or prompt from their own work.
Participants then stepped forward one by one to test and refine their prompts in front of the class, applying what they had learned the day before. This created a practical and highly engaging learning environment where participants could see AI being applied to actual Zain business tasks.
This approach helped the cohort move beyond generic AI examples and directly experience how prompt engineering could improve their own work.
Day 3: Responsible AI and Startup Hackathon
The third day began with a focused session on responsible and ethical AI, covering the opportunities, risks, challenges, and governance considerations associated with AI adoption.
The remainder of the day was dedicated to a five-hour hackathon. Participants were divided into small groups of three to four members and challenged to build a startup from scratch using AI.
Each team used AI to complete a full startup-building journey, including
- Ideating and selecting a startup concept
- Developing the idea into a business plan
- Creating a go-to-market strategy
- Building an Excel-based financial model
- Creating an investor pitch deck
- Designing client-facing presentations
- Building a functional website
- Building a functional app or digital prototype
- Producing brochures and advertisements
- Creating video, audio, and image-based marketing assets
At the end of the day, each group presented its startup to the full class. Teams were given approximately 10 minutes to present their concept, outputs, and AI-enabled process. The class then voted for the top three projects.
This track enabled business users to experience AI not only as a tool for productivity, but as a complete business-building engine.
4. Track 2: AI for Coders and Engineers
